String Department - Core Philosophy
Welcome to the string department at the South Shore Conservatory! By choosing to study the violin, viola, cello, double bass, or guitar at either our Duxbury or Hingham locations, you are joining a community of teachers, students, and families that are committed to the highest ideals in performing arts education. We offer traditional and Suzuki teaching methods and teachers that are experienced in working with every type of student, from young children and adult beginners to advanced high school students.
In addition to studying their instrument of choice, our students have the opportunity to study music in all of its varied genres from classical, American fiddle, Irish fiddle, pop, rock, and more. We also offer classes in basic musicianship and music theory, fiddle groups, and ensembles ranging in size from small chamber groups all the way up to a full symphony orchestra as part of the South Shore Conservatory Youth Orchestra (SSCYO) program. Throughout the year are numerous chances on both campuses for students to perform in workshops and recitals, participate in string-related events and opportunities with fellow students, and to hear our world-class faculty perform on Conservatory Concert Series.
Our string teachers are among the best and most experienced in the Boston Metro area, holding advanced degrees from some of the nation’s finest conservatories and universities, performing with many of the major ensembles in the region, and bringing years of experience and a commitment to teaching at the highest levels.
