What is the role of music education in the 21st century? How can the creative process be leveraged as a vehicle for positive social change in our local community? What role does music play in developing the next generation of empathetic, articulate, and reflective artist-citizens?

With support from the Kathy O. Czerny Innovation Fund, SSC Transform is a multi-faceted initiative that reimagines the role of music education in the 21st century. Launched in 2020, the first cycle of SSC Transform was completed in July 2021, with the second cycle slate for 2023-2024.

Program Details

At the core of SSC Transform is the annual commission of a new musical composition that explores a current event or social justice topic. SSC Transform will prioritize the commission of underrepresented composers.

Each composition will be accompanied by a teaching curriculum focused on the selected social justice topic. The project equips music educators with the tools needed to effectively investigate and explore these oftentimes complex topics with students and community members.

SSC will partner with local school music programs that might not have the means to commission new music. Partner schools will receive a copy of the music and teaching curriculum, and the SMF Music Director will visit partner schools and lead clinics on the new music.

SSC will sponsor Transform Fellows, students from each partner school who will receive full scholarships to attend Summer Music Festival and perform in the world premiere of the new composition.

Each commissioned compose will be in residence at South Shore Conservatory for 2-3 days. The composer will work with students on the new music and lead composition workshops for regional students, educators, and community members.

A team of educators, artists, and community members from inside and outside of South Shore Conservatory who will guide programmatic visioning, development, end execution.
