A competition for growing musicians
You don’t have to be an advanced musician to participate.
The HuiMin Wang Youth Concerto Competition is about much more than winning. It gives students a meaningful goal to work toward, the chance to dig deeply into a piece and valuable experience performing for professional musicians.
Students are encouraged to choose repertoire that fits their current abilities. A thoughtfully prepared performance can be just as meaningful as technically difficult repertoire.

Frequently asked questions
Questions before you register?
Here are a few of the most common things students and families should know before competition day.
Does my student need to be an advanced musician?
No. The competition is open to students at a range of ages and skill levels. Students should choose repertoire that is appropriate for their current abilities. The goal is meaningful preparation, musical growth and gaining performance experience.
How difficult should the repertoire be?
The repertoire does not need to be exceptionally difficult. A slower movement or another appropriate work that is comfortably within a student’s technical abilities can be an excellent choice. A well-prepared performance is more important than choosing the most virtuosic piece possible.
What repertoire is eligible?
Students may prepare Baroque, Classical, or early Romantic repertoire. One or more movements may be performed as long as the complete performance stays within the 10-minute time limit. If you are unsure whether a work qualifies, check with your SSC Teaching Artist or contact SSC before registering.
How long can the performance be?
Performances may be up to 10 minutes total. Students performing longer works should work with their teacher to make appropriate cuts.
Will students have accompaniment?
Yes. String and wind students will receive two rehearsals with a collaborative pianist and will perform with accompaniment during the competition.
When are winners announced?
First, second, third place and honorable mention recipients will be announced at the end of the competition.
What happens if my student wins?
Winners will be invited to perform in a winners recital. One overall competition winner will also have the opportunity to perform with the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, February 27 at 3 PM at Thayer Academy.
