Winds Department - Core Philosophy

Welcome to the Woodwind and Brass departments at SSC! By choosing to study a woodwind or brass instrument you and your child are joining a community of teachers, parents and students committed to the highest ideals in performing arts education. Whether you’re picking an instrument for fun or working on Districts, Semsba, All-State or college auditions, our extraordinary faculty will make sure you are well prepared. Instruction is offered at both our Hingham and Duxbury campuses. The Winds department offers many events. Duet night is a wonderful event that gives our students and faculty an opportunity to play duets together in concert. We also have Winds Day which brings us all together to practice and perform holiday music. In addition to studying their instrument of choice they are strongly encouraged to participate in chamber music ensembles with a vast array of traditional and contemporary literature. Our students also can participate in basic musicianship and theory classes, have a full orchestra experience with SSCYO youth symphony, as well as a chance to hear world-class faculty perform. In addition, students will have the opportunity to perform in weekly workshops and monthly recitals. SSC offers many outstanding summer programs including Flute Symphony, one of the largest congregation of flutists in the country and Summer Music Festival, one of the state’s most highly-regarded band programs.
