Dance/Movement Therapy Department - Core Philosophy
Where there is life, there is movement and we at SSC love to celebrate this precious gift! From our very first breath to our final heartbeats, we constantly move to the ever-changing rhythms of life. Using dance/movement therapy techniques, we can gain significant insights through observation of breath, posture, body language, and movement patterns. This information can help support positive growth and change for individuals of all ages and abilities.
Dance/movement therapists are clinically trained in accredited graduate school programs to observe/assess movement patterns. They develop specific clinical interventions to support individualized goals such as promoting body awareness, increasing self-esteem, practicing self-regulation and improving communication skills 1, 2. Dance/movement therapy integrates various elements of physical wellness including: body awareness, flexibility, coordination, and strength 1.

Dance/movement therapy also promotes socialization as individuals of all ages and abilities come together to dance to beloved music. Recent research in neuroscience has found support for the use of mirroring exercises in dance/movement therapy to aid with specialized populations including individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. There is also evidence to support cognitive benefits from the integration of dance/movement for aging populations including individuals with Dementia and Parkinson’s Disease.
Who We Serve: At SSC, we offer dance/movement therapy to individuals of all ages and abilities onsite at Hingham & Duxbury campuses as well as in community-based settings.
