Summer Vocal Institute is a unique eight-day vocal experience guaranteed to help motivated students achieve their personal best. Singers can return to their vocal activities in the fall as more accomplished and knowledgeable vocalists.

This total immersion workshop is specially designed for students, ages 14-18, who are interested in classical or musical theatre singing. Focusing on age-appropriate vocal technique and repertoire, the program provides important tools to help students discover the full potential of their instrument, and prepare them for more advanced studies.

Additionally, students receive daily masterclasses with Conservatory faculty members, on the following topics:

  • Audition preparation
  • Diction
  • Vocal Technique
  • Collaboration with a pianist
  • Repertoire selection
  • History of Vocal Music
  • Stage movement and “terms”
  • Overcoming stage fright
  • Interpretation
  • Putting together an audition notebook
  • Practice techniques
  • Yoga/relaxation techniques
  • Musicianship for Singers
  • Sight Reading

Performance Opportunities

Students have numerous opportunities fo perform on a daily basis in various proupings: solo, duets, trios, choral, larger ensembles and musical theater scenes. Students work closely with other passionate singers in preparing music for the final performance. The program culminates in a recital on Friday, August 14, 7:30 pm in Cox Hall, Hingham.

Auditions

Auditions for placement and reepertoire assignment are required. Summer Vocal Institute accepts a maximum of 25 singers. Students should prepare two songs, one classical, one musical theatre. An accompanist will be provided. Auditions are May 23, 11 am - 1 pm in Hingham and June 20, from 11 am -
3 pm in Duxbury. Please call 781-749-7565, ext. 48 to schedule an audition time. Auditions are on first come, first served basis. Your time will be confirmed by phone or e-mail.

If you are 9 - 13 years old, just love singing and have some experience, perhaps singing in a chorus or at school, SVI Junior is specifically designed with you in mind! This five-day program can provide important tools to help you become more confident as you begin your journey as a singer. And you don’t even need to have studied privately to get the most out of this wonderful, beginning vocal opportunity.

SVI Junior focuses on age-appropriate vocal technique and repertoire, and helps students discover the full potential of their instrument, preparing them for more advanced studies. Additionally, students participate in daily master classes with Conservatory faculty members, on the following topics:

  • Diction
  • Interacting with an accompanist

Show us your stuff!

Because SVI Junior is designed to meet each individual student’s vocal needs, informal auditions for placement are required. SVI Junior accepts a maximum of 25 singers. Students should be prepared to sing one song of their choosing. An accompanist will be provided.

May 23 3 - 5 pm Hingham
June 20 11 am - 3 pm Duxbury

All auditions take place either The Ellison Center for the Arts in Duxbury or South Shore Conservatory’s Hingham campus. Please call 781-934-2731 x. 21 or 781-749-7565 x. 20 to schedule an audition time. Auditions are on a first come, first served basis.

Financial aid is available for students showing financial need. Financial aid forms must be filed no later than July 1, 2009. Download form.
