One of the many benefits of attending a community school for the arts is the opportunity to share your love of music with others in one of our many value-added workshops and performance opportunities. We aim to create a supportive environment which will help you to grow as a performer and provide feedback about your progress. All the offerings below are free to SSC private instruction students.
Weekly Performance Workshops
Jonathan Roberts, Sarah Troxler
Included in private lesson tuition are weekly performance workshops (WPW). These workshops are designed to give students an opportunity to rehearse their pieces in a concert hall while receiving performance-based feedback from a teacher other than their private lesson instructor. Workshops are run by accomplished collaborative pianists who are highly experienced in accompanying professional instrumentalists and singers.

Accelerando Recital and Masterclass Series
This program is for school age students playing or singing classical music at an intermediate and advanced level. The masterclass provides instrumentalists and singers with the opportunity to play for each other and members of our incredible faculty who will engage the students in exploring topics such as: musical interpretation, expressivity, how to manage nerves and body awareness. Participants are encouraged to engage in peer feedback, and develop a critical musical vocabulary. Tea and cookies are provided. Each class is run by a consistent pianist who will accompany the students and provide coaching in collaborating with a pianist. Each week a faculty member from a different department will facilitate the class, offering feedback and engaging the students in the process. Students can then perform for their friends and family in an intimate Friday night recital.
If you are interested in participating, talk to your teacher who will sign you up. There are 6 places per class and 12 per recital. Students are not required to participate in the recital but it is highly recommended. For more information about this free program for SSC private lesson students you can contact VP of Education Lorna Jane Norris.

Recitals and Open Mics
Regular performance opportunities in a supportive, relaxed environment are essential for developing musicians. Your teacher will prepare you and encourage you to participate when ready. Share your music with family and friends in one of our monthly Sunday recitals. For students working on contemporary music we offer Teen Open Mic nights. These are free to all current SSC private instruction students. Non-SSC students are welcome to perform for $10. Audience admission is free. Sound system, keyboard, drums, accompanist (keys or guitar) are provided, or bring a karaoke track on your iPod.
If you have any questions about student performance opportunities, please contact SSC's Student Engagement Coordinator, Sarah Troxler.
