Teaching Artist Statement
Teaching yoga is about exploring a whole person: body, mind and breath. When students feel aligned in these three areas, their world expands. I feel extremely fortunate to be in a position to introduce life time habits of movement and mindfulness to children. These habits help nurture the spirit and calm the mind so it is easier to weather the storms that humans face on a daily basis. I am also happy to offer children at the Conservatory a safe and caring place to explore and reach their potential in a noncompetitive environment.
Meg Durkin, MS, E-RYT, RCYT, is the founder of Yoga Magic 4 Kids, a national ChildLight Yoga Trainer, a licensed Yoga 4 Classroom trainer, and a certified health coach. Meg is Certified in ChildLight Yoga (Basic, Baby & Toddler and Teen programs), Radiant Child Yoga, a 200 hour adult Registered Yoga Teacher, and has received certificates in Brain Gym 170, Yoga Ed, Every Kid's Yoga, and Yoga for the Special Child. She has a B.A. in American Studies from Middlebury College and a M.S. in Library & Information Studies from Simmons College, and has worked with children for more than twenty five years in a variety of capacities. She recently took some courses to better serve her community. Her courses included Child Development, Abnormal Psychology and Anatomy & Physiology. Meg teaches workshops to elementary school teachers about integrating yoga into the classroom. She is a licensed Yoga 4 Classroom instructor. The six hour workshop includes learning about breath, standing yoga poses, seated yoga poses at the desk, imagination vacations, be well topics, and mindful games. She also offers a 10 week residency in elementary classrooms to help get the teachers used to integrating the curriculum into their daily schedules for movement breaks, transitions, focus, calm, awakening creativity and many more reasons. Meg has taught at South Shore Conservatory since 2009.
Meg is the mother of four children ranging in age from ten to eighteen. Her experience being a mother helps her teaching abilities in yoga. She is able to relate to many different developmental stages with both boys and girls.
