Teaching Artist Statement
I believe that musical talent is a much more nuanced, profound and multi-faceted attribute than it is often treated in our culture. Music is an ocean and there are countless ways to explore it! What I find continually inspiring in teaching is the seemingly infinite ways that each student’s personality and individuality will manifest itself through their learning process and their music.
Elan holds a bachelor’s degree in piano performance from New York University and is a motivated and energetic teacher, with over twelve years of teaching experience. A jazz pianist by training, Elan loves to incorporate improvisation and composition techniques into lessons, building his lesson plans around a student’s interest within all styles and levels. He started teaching at SSC in 2015.
Elan Mehler has released five records internationally. For the Dutch Classical and Jazz label, Challenge Records, Elan released “Being There, Here” a trio record in 2012 and his first solo record “Early Sunday Morning” was released in 2014. His three records for Gilles Peterson’s London based label Brownswood are “Scheme For Thought” 2007, “The After Suite” 2009 and “Half Seas Over” (with Adam McBride-Smith) 2010.
