Brad Fugate
Dr. Brad Fugate, countertenor and baritone, hails from Lynn, MA. Raised in the mountains of NC, Brad began his academic musical studies at Furman University in Greenville, SC, and continued his education by obtaining a Masters in Conducting at Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He then made the decision to study voice full-time. After graduate work at Florida State in the Voice Performance department, he moved to Boston where he was able to take advantage of wonderful music-making opportunities and also study at New England Conservatory with Susan Clickner. Brad moved to Greensboro in 2002 in order to work toward a Doctorate in Vocal Performance at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He studied voice with Dr. Carla LeFevre and graduated in 2006. Brad’s research focuses mainly on gender, sexuality, the falsettist, and musical comedy. Professionally, Brad is equally at home in opera, oratorio, solo song and musical theatre as a baritone or a falsettist.
Recently, Brad sang Ravel's Histoires naturelles at New England Conservatory, premiered the role of Sir Andrew Aguecheek in Joel Feingin’s rendition of Twelfth Night with Longleaf Opera Company (NC), he played two different roles in Gilbert and Sullivan operettas with New England Light Opera, sang the roles of Nilakantha (Lakme), Melchior (Amahl and the Night Visitors) with the UNCG Opera, Ben (The Telephone) with Greensboro Opera (NC), performed Jesus in Godspell with the High Point Theatre (NC), alto soloist at Church of the Advent–Beacon Hill, Church of the Reedemer–Chestnut Hill, Marsh Chapel Choir–Boston University, sang Handel’s Messiah with the Atlanta Baroque Symphony, sang the role of Opec in Peter Schiekele’s opera The Abduction of Figaro with Western New York Chamber Orchestra, sang the alto soli in the Christmas Oratorio with Chapel Hill Community Chorus (NC) and performed the multi-dimensional role of Man 1 in Lucky Stiff at Turtle Lane Playhouse in Newton, MA. Brad started teaching at South Shore Conservatory in 2008. He also enjoys playing the piano and is currently studying Japanese.
