Marking the Moment - Mike Dick, Photographer

Curiosity, off the Glades, Cohasset Harbor Mass.

April 4 – June 30, 2024
Artist reception: Sunday, April 21, 1-3 pm

South Shore Art Center photographer Mike Dick’s Marking the Moment collection marks his vantage point attained after fifty years of making pictures. Mike captures special moments of time and place that arise from the nexus of light, location, weather, time, natural forces, humans, habitation, society, art.

Artist Statement
Cameras, in the hands of a receptive photographer, record unexpected alignments of a time and a place. A good photograph takes its time to come forward and pull its viewer in; and when it does, it can startle, it can calm, it can satisfy. A worthy image reveals a hidden presence, a sense beyond sight. After a lifetime in photography, I love to shoot, to present engaging photographs, to convey that hidden presence --that sense beyond sight.

Artist Bio
Starting out in his late teens with a hand-me-down 35mm camera, Mike shot and processed black and white film. In college at UConn, he trained with large and medium format cameras, fine lenses, and precision light meters. Mike learned to visualize, capture, and print images with care and with purpose. His instructors instilled that good photographs must be thoughtful and technically excellent.

While at UConn, Mike had the great good fortune to visit the photography archives at the Museum of Modern Art. It was a watershed afternoon. He gazed into unframed, signed original prints, straight out of the portfolios-- Ansel Adams, Imogene Cunningham, Robert Frank, Eugene Smith, Dorothea Lange, Minor White. Farther on down the road, Mike connected with color landscapes and abstract photographs of Harry Callahan, Paul Caponigro, and Dean Brown.

Mike grasped the dynamics, the subtlety, the artistry from these influential photographers. He caught onto their vision and their choices, the many visual levels they placed deliberately in the image. Those superb photographers illuminated the path for him with a light that never fades on a path that still stretches ahead 50 years on.

His art has been on display at South Shore Arts Center, Paul Pratt Library, North River Arts Society, Northeast Photography, Mount Holyoke College Friends of Art. In 2018, he was awarded Best in Show for photography at SSAC’s Festival of the Arts. He is a member of South Shore Art Center and North River Arts Society.
